Herterton House: Frank and Marjorie Lawley’s masterpiece garden – the book

It’s a stunner that they’ve created with total dedication (even obsession) over 40 years.  Now, delightfully, and as other obsessed gardeners have done (Sir Roy Strong on his garden, Sir Charles and Lady Fraser on their super-packed acre at Shepherd House near Edinburgh, and many more), the Lawley’s are describing the garden’s creation and underlying ideas in a proposed book.  Photographs are by Val Corbett.  If you might be interested in having a copy (there’s no publisher fixed yet), then please read the attached copy.  If you are interested in topiary, old fashioned plants, deep romantic gardens, formality in a cottage garden format, then the book will be for you.  The garden is seriously good.

About david stuart

garden writer and journalist, and occasionally a designer, with a garden in the Scottish borders, and his pal's gardens in Edinburgh, London, and Lincolnshire. They keep both of us very, very busy. Books I've written listed on my website, and dozens of articles and garden and plant pictures. Currently working on several new projects. One of these was to return to painting - see the blog - and which is proving exciting! www.david-stuart.co.uk or, more fun, have a look at www.pinterest.com/davidcstuart
